Hi
We currently have a situation were some staff are struggling to open some of our doors( some are fire doors) in a new building. We have adjusted the closers etc but is still a issue. we have also looked at magnetic plates for the doors but this is not practicable as we can't have the doors open for security reasons etc.
I was wondering if any one else had experienced this type of problem?
What do establishments do regarding special needs , with regards personelhaving to open doors regularly that also have to meet fire regulations but still require a lot of effort to open them.

I am aware of the DDA guidance on door opening , regarding newtons required to open doors etc.

Thanks in advance

It might be worth calling the experts to ask the question. Back in the olden days I used the likes of Assa Abloy or Dorma who have solutions for almost all eventualities, you may need a powered unit with a pad or PIR. Worth even just calling them I am sure you are not the first person to have these issues (complaints).

There are other companies available, these are the ones I used though

We had similar issues in a sheltered housing scheme for the elderly. During one inspection a fire officer insisted that we should have FD60S doors that a 102 year old resident just could not open - effectively making them a prisoner in her own home, you can imagine the local papers had a field day. We compromised by beefing up the corridor fire doors and using maglocks in corridors, which only release on sounders being activated, and can be reset following a n alarm test - although on releasing, a door knocked over another resident, we do have signage and inductions for new residents.

Seems to me that the doors are not the problem but the Security is?

You have to be careful not to cause injury to employees and members of the public due to them having to open the doors.

My daughter couldn't open the many fire doors in her school and they knew how inconvenient it was for them to provide a "minder" to assist her, they also knew I would be on to the Equality Act people if they didn't do something about it.

During last summer they had every single fire door fitted with a hold open device.
