Hi, Has anybody got advice on the above?
One of our employees has been turned away from the opticians because he has no risk assessment to tell them what glasses he requires. He is a crane driver so no hazards like grinding/ welding etc. I wonder if a brief assessment is sufficient or would it need to stipulate things like, plastic frames and poly-carb lenses for example? Thanks

Why does he need them then?

Alot of construction sites have mandatory PPE upon entering the site, very often safety eye wear is a must have, so we have to provide it.

I wonder if the optician is trying his/her best to exercise their duty of care in providing the correct glasses? To do so they would need some information on the nature of the hazards/risks, but I would have thought that a few simple questions to the individual (and answers from) would achieve this!
Of course, the alternative would be for you to send him with something (a letter) specifying what he/she needs.

The optician may of course also be trying to avoid the situation where they provide a pair of specs and then you go back and say that they are the 'wrong' ones. And they end up out of pocket!

We provide a form which specifies type of frame and lense as well as style. Fair enough, as the optician might not know what is needed for various environments.

Being turned away from the opticians because "he has no risk assessment" and being turned away from a site because he has no eye protection (safety) are completely different.
Go buy him a pair of "wrap round "eye shield or a pair of safety spectacles from Arco or similar.
