Hi all

Just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention.

I just had a call from a woman purporting to be from the HSE – she confirmed she meant the Health and Safety Executive. My eye……………….!!

She was looking for the contact details for the “persons responsible for ordering chemicals”. I asked her again which organisation she was with and again said 'the HSE, you know them, the government organisation, the Health and Safety Executive'.

I said the call sounded very much like a sales call. She then asked for my position and my boss’s name. She wanted to send us information on chemicals in the workplace.

I then asked her what was the nature of the call and what did she want to send me.

"It’s to do with changes to legislation regarding chemicals - chemicals which you won't be allowed to use onsite like vehicle cleaning products, tar removal, washbay products".

I again told her this was sounded very much a sales call.

But I was intrigued what she meant. So I asked - "What changes do you mean? Are you referring to the new COSHH ACOP?”………………she then hung up.

It obviously was not the HSE just by the way she presented herself, the manner of the call and her telephone skills.

Has anyone else had a similar call?

Not from someone pretending to be from the HSE but have had loads from a cleaning company saying as I was such a great Customer (Never bought from them) they would send me football tickets (Worst sport ever!) and quietly added they would also send some cleaning products......

I have heard that this was quite a big scam (HSE one you mention) and I think trading standards possibly got involved.

If you type in HSE scams in google a big list appears

"Worst sport ever"? really, about baseball, NASCAR, American football (most of the American sports). F1, yawn-a-thon.

Anyway I digress, we had a spate of these calls a while back. About 10 in as many days, all trying to sell stuff. As soon they find out they are speaking to someone who knows what they are talking about they hang up.

I was bored one day and let the guy go on and on for about an hour about what we must do under this made up regulation and that obsolete piece of guidance. In the end I offered him some training, he didn't see the funny side.
