We have a servicing team leader who is looking at the seating in his area. It is a area where they both service machines and also use a computer in-between times. Currently they use office chair which we have been trying to persuade them against for some time. They are now looking at a high work chair instead. They are however requesting them with casters. As the area has a hard floor I am not satisfied that this is a safe option. Our chair supplier has agreed that it wouldn’t be the norm to supply them with casters attached. In essence I’m looking for back up! Where can I go to find the proof that it isn’t a good idea to supply tall work chairs with casters for use in a work area with a hard floor!

Thanks for reminding me that I need to go to one of our labs and replace the free rolling casters on the chairs with braking casters. We use the sort that are locked on when nobody is sitting in the chair but the brakes come off when the person is sitting in them and can move about if the need to. I have seen people injure themselves using a freely moving chair on a hard floor. They move to sit down but nudge the chair and it moves off and they fall on to the floor. Looks funny but it can cause a serious injury.

Reminds me of a number of years ago on a new-build ship. The office was fitted with normal office chairs on casters. If you wanted to go from one worksation to another you just waited for the ship to roll the right way and let go .... great fun!
Spoilsports replaced the chairs very quickly for non-castor ones!
