Please forgive me for yet another thread on this subject but would anyone agree with me when I say the Regulations have been re-written because the previous regs were insufficient as far as the type of survey being carried out is concerned? (Along with other concerns as well). I use the example of the Refurbishment/Demolition survey being far more intrusive than previous surveys that were allowed.

Can anybody give a link or describe how a contractor goes about refurbishment / demolishing is done, knowing that most buildings before 1999 contained asbestos? I've read about it, but I've not actually seen how it's done to say a tower block or shop. I've personally stripped out asbestos containing materials from my home garage roof using a noddy suit, mask, gloves, wetting down, double bagging then transporting to a registered Sita handling unit. BUT How does this compare to a larger unit with a demolishing contractor? Also, is this the end of knocking tower-blocks and chimneys over using explosives (or fire) - as all these old structures must contain vast quantities of asbestos in the very cement and bricks, not just on small panels like my garage?

This is what it says when I followed that link in the above post : Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 link to external website came into force on 6 April 2012, updating previous asbestos regulations to take account of the European Commission's view that the UK had not fully implemented the EU Directive on exposure to asbestos (Directive 2009/148/EC). In practice the changes are fairly limited. They mean that some types of non-licensed work with asbestos now have additional requirements, i.e. notification of work, medical surveillance and record keeping. All other requirements remain unchanged. No mention then of the changes to required surveys, even when following a few more of the links?
