Hi, I wonder if anyone could give me some advise? I have a client who has recently purchased an air compressor (15 bar - volume 70). He has asked me to do a risk assessment on the piece of equipment - but it is totally out of my knowledge base, according to The Pressure System Safety Regulations 2000 they need to be inspected by a competent person yearly which is usually by the insurance company - is this correct for such a small compressor? I know of loads of companies that use them and do not have this system in place. If this needs to be carried out, could anyone recommend a company that could do this (in Hampshire) cause as I said earlier - out of my remit! Any help/advice would be gratefully received. Regards Elfin

First, I always hate it when people ask me to do a risk assessment on a piece of equipment. It is what you are proposing to do with it and what it is capable of that is important. You don't give the units for the volume you state. If the product of pressure (in bar) and volume (in litres) of the receiver exceeds 250 bar litres, then it needs to have a Written Scheme of Examination, drawn up by a competent person. It must then be inspected according to the specification in this scheme. It may be annual and it is likely that sometimes it will need to be opened up to inspect the interior. There are many companies that can do this. Most of them are country-wide. If you Google "engineering inspection written schemes" you will see plenty.

Zurich are very good and they use an online reporting system, or Allianz also provide the service. Don't forget, usually the inspection will require the owner of the equipment to peri are the compressor for inspection, ie a maintenance or service engineer...

Hi Thanks, I think it will be via Zurich, as my client is with them. The compressor is used for air tools, he is in the marine industry, small manufacturing company. Sorry being really thick - what do you mean by peri? Regards Elfin

I suspect that "peri are" means "prepare". It makes sense then. In my experience the compressor only requires this every few years. The inspection on ours is simply visual most years.

No, sorry. Our contract is for over 1000 items! I don't think it can be scaled.

Hi No worries, that would be difficult to breakdown! Really appreciate your help with this. I will email my client and tell him he needs to get the Insurance chap in to do the written scheme of examination. Many thanks Elfin

Apologies Elfin, I've know idea why iPhone's have seemingly got worse in predicting text since the iOS 7 update... Prepare is correct... It is 24 months between visits for this kind of inspections this based on my last reports, of course it will require regular servicing in between.
