Experience That Can Only Be Obtained From The Very Industries Asking For It
Rank: Forum user

All,
I'm after some advice on industries which will only employ people without 'experience that can only be obtained from such industries'.
Oil & Gas, Rail, etc industries always ask for specific experience in these fields when seeking to fill vacancies. Surely, people will get the experience if given the opportunity in the first place by one company or the other.
I have over 10 years HSE experience in the Defence sector and seeking a similar role in any industry, however, Oil and Gas (not necessarily offshore), Rail, etc seem to be no-go areas due to my lack of experience in these sectors.
Has anyone from such industries or anyone who has dealt with them one way or another got any advise or guidance on how to get in there? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Dave.

Pradeesh,
Thanks. Good luck too on your search for a job. I appreciate the fact that experience is necessary for some jobs. For graduates who may have had work attachment opportunities with O & G companies, experience won't be an issue, but for the numerous of people who already have HSE experience within other industries, it usually is, although I stand to be corrected!

Network Rail moved away from specifying that key post holders had to have x years prior rail experience some 10 years ago. There was a recognition of a need to bring in new blood from other sectors. Helps mitigate tunnel vision and the acceptance of custom and practice.
I've seen one ad from a train operator that also recognised that experience in comparable sectors, e.g. with major hazards could add value.

Peter,
Many thanks for your reply. Most of the ads still ask for specific rail industry experience as an essential requirement though. I guess they advertise that way but in reality, they may consider those without. Will keep searching.

Dave.

Dave, Keep applying too - if you dont apply you have no chance of getting an opening. When you do apply make sure you sell your transferable skills as much as possible - your experiences and knowledge are there and this can be useful you just need to try and show how they would fit into the the sector. Good luck in your hunt. Stuart

You have worked in defence so I assume you are security cleared?

Yes, I am security cleared. I do check the website for security cleared jobs and also met a representative of theirs, but although they deal with several sectors, the majority of their vacancies seem to be IT-related.
