I was made redundant back in June 14, and I was a Health & Safety manager for an American corporation, I now work as an Health & Safety Advisor for a company on less then £7.00 per hour, I know its my choice to work here, but job opportunities, are not out there, I am CMIOSH, was it worth going for chartered, as it seems it doesn’t get you anywhere in the job market. I am looking everyday on all the job sites. I am even willing to work away, and yet still nothing, Rant over

In the time it took you to consider writing this post, logging in, writing the post and then correcting any typos before sending the post, you could have logged into a domain registration website, created a domain and got the ball rolling to start your very own consultancy...?? CMIOSH doesn't mean to say employers will come and knock on your door, you still need to do your bit. :)

Please read this post in the manner in which it was intended :) - not nasty.

Terry

Make sure you are with the proper agencies there are jobs coming up a lot in South Wales.

I seem to remember recently one for TATA Steel Port Talbot.

Keep trying, forget the CMIOSH thing and look more on yourself as a Safety Person.
CMIOSH means a lot to some and nothing to others.

Good Luck Alex

I guess being a CMIOSH is better than not being one - I would have thought it would give you an advantage over those without it? That said there are, unfortunately, a lot of Chartered persons out there seeking work.

Good luck in your search though Terry.

Never give up!

I registered with a number of well known Job websites and was head hunted from my CV.

I was subsequently informed by HR of the Company I now work for that they carried out a search on the job website using the words NEBOSH Trained - hey presto up popped my details and I received an email inviting me to apply for the job.

And...
I have been contacted direct on LinkedIn about positions. CMIOSH is worth it in my opinion- as stated previously- it will give you the edge over people without it.

Good luck

Yes its worth it - for many more reasons than the job market - as Hilary says linkedin is a great source and a nuisance too......................................

I get bombarded with agencies - got my current role of there though after being approached.

Setting up as a consultant is dead easy. It is getting work that is hard.

From experience I found that building a rapport with staff in a few agencies rather than just upload a CV was the key to finding employment.

In my opinion there are a few different reasons for people wanting to gain CMIOSH . I have met a minority who just want the letters as it may (or may not ) give them a leg up in the job market. Its almost like an MSc where it becomes more and more common as the industry progresses and expectations raise.

In my experience a Safety Professional is hired on a range of mostly personal attributes, soft skills and experiences not the letters. Interviews are normally undertaken with HR and operational type roles , regional managers etc and not always other safety professionals so its a huge ability to sell your experience as opposed to professional memberships. To a Construction Manager or Managing Director CMIOSH probably does not mean very much.

For me CMIOSH was about a personal achievement and wanting to gain the highest professional standing available at the current time and to identify myself professionaly within our industry im now working down under where it doesnt mean very much to the industry but personally it does
.
Is it worth it ? Im sure the majority would think so but it depends on your initial reasons for doing it and what your expectations are? Im sure there are some fantastic safety professionals in the industry who are not even members!

All the best in the hunt and I agree with Phillip Clarke , find 2-3 reputable recruiters and build rapport with one person in each so.

I would cry my eyes out if I was on £7 an hour. Better than job seekers right enough but I would be on a plane to Qatar or UAE or anywhere there is work, £7, what can that buy you? unlucky bud

RockyB, it won't buy you a plane ticket to Qatar or UAE that's for sure!

Blimey Terry556..... £7 per hour is horrendous. I wouldn't get out of bed for that so admire your stoicism. Just what the hell has happened to our industry? CMIOSH has not been the panacea some thought it would be...... obviously. Hang on in there..... it can only get better.....surely.
