Hello Everyone, I am interested in getting into the Health & Safety industry,

I completed my Nebosh General in 2011 and willing to do further certificates to progress. I have had experience with writing, reviewing and auditioning risk assessments with my previous job/employer who were a local authority fire service in a community fire safety role.

I currently work for a Petrochemical Fire Service as a firefighter and think its about the right time to move on but where do I start ?

I have registered with a couple of agencies, but I have been asked what are my expectations ? I would prefer to work in construction or back into fire safety ?

Any advice to help me stand out would be helpful

Ask yourself some questions:

Why do I want to move on?
Do I enjoy my line of work?
Why do I want to be in Health and Safety?
Do I want a job which makes good use of my past experience, i.e., fire?
What are my financial expectations?
Have I the qualifications/experience for what I want or else what are the gaps and can I undertake more study to fill the gaps etc?
What are my skills. e.g., trainer, interpersonal, technical, management, IT, communication, presentation, etc?
Do I want instead to take on board some other areas as well, because often nowaways many employers add environmental and/or quality into the job role to save employing more than one person.

If you have a strong background in fire then it would be a good idea to make use of that experience. Insurers (Loss control risk management), Fire Protection companies, companies undertaking a fire risk assessment review of their business, fire related training, etc., are all areas which would make good use of your skills and experience.

It is really about you taking a look at yourself and what you have to offer and then looking at what you want in future and then working out the gaps and then evaluating what is required to fill those gaps, and of course if filling those gaps, if they exist, is then practical for you, etc.

I would suggest there are plenty of options for yourself but you need to make some decisions on what you want but do so taking into account what you already have to offer.

Regards.

A lot of poeple thinbk that getting a NEBOSH cert means that they can then become a safety professional. Not many people actually read what NEBOSH say about the cert(s):- "NEBOSH's Certificate-level qualifications give a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and staff with health and safety among their day to day responsibilities. These qualifications are widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety".

So I would advise taking on as much safety responsibility in your existing role first, or look for a job WHICH HAS SAFETY AS A PART OF IT. Hope this helps.
