What is the IPD Skills Development Portfolio?

Hi
I have passed my NEBOSH National Diploma and have applied for Graduate Membership. I understand that if I want to work toward Chartered Membership I will undertake a Skills Development Portfolio.
Please could any readers advise what format this takes?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Decimomal.
It's actually that page of the IOSH website that has prompted me to raise it as a question on the Forum. I understand there is a requirement to complete one, but wonder if anyone here could advise what one is and what I ought to expect?
Thanks again.

First of all it is workplace based. Think of it as being very similar to an NVQ in that respect. You have to be able to show that you have completed or been involved in work that matches certain criteria When I completed mine in 2006 / 7 there were 6 areas and I had to choose 2 elements from each area maiking a total of 12 criteria. I think that has been reduced now. I had to choose the criteria that I was going to use in my portfolio and for each criterion I had to make a development plan of what I was going to do and how I was going to do it. I then had to complete the work and provide documentary evidence that the work had been completed along with a dated inventory of the evidence provided. For each criterion, once completed, I then had to compile a reflective account detailing what had been done, what methods were used and how I felt I had benefitted from the work, in the same way that you would with CPD. The whole process took about 18 months to complete.

Thanks very much PL53. That's given me a good idea of what lays ahead. Very much appreciated.

Hi
Make sure in your introduction you explain what you are evidencing and then in your reflection tell the assessor how successful you were. If there are a few things you can't evidence, include why in your reflection.
e.g. When evidencing a presentation for 1.4 it asks for feedback after the presentation and your follow up. You may have undertaken a board presentation and the board decided that it could be simplified to roll out to the managers, but you haven't feedback sheets for this - so just explain this in your reflection. That way you have covered all the criterion for that element.

Joseph I would echo advice by others and the comparison between your Skills development Portfolio is spot on. The current requirement is that you select 1 performance criteria from elements 1 - 3 and 2 criteria from elements 4 and 5, giving a total of 7.
I registered for mine in November last year and yesterday I received the feedback from my 4th element so now over half way. As Linda says the reflective account is a big part as it can cover areas not covered by your evidence.
Lastly I would contact IOSH membership as they were very helpful and although they cannot give you the complete guidance until you register, they were able to send me a copy of the SDP criteria summary.
Happy to offer any other help/advice if you PM me, good luck in completing the last stage of the Chartered journey

PS one other final bit of information that may help is that you are permitted to use evidence from up to two years before the date on which you submit the criteria. This was particularly useful for me as I work in the Education sector and tend to timetable a lot of my workload around policies/procedures during the June - Aug break which was prior to me registering in November.

Thanks Linda and Kevin, I am very greatful for your advice and guidance and Linda.
I understand from IOSH that I may start the next stage of the journey if they accept my Graduate status in April. Fingers crossed :-)

If IOSH still do it, ask for a IPD mentor. Mine was invaluable.
Once I had completed 1 criteron I went through it with my mentor face to face, and he pointed me in the right direction.
It is alot of work, but is relatively simple and systematic to achieve - just make sure your cross reference back to the criteria to make sure you have it all covered and think outside the box (e.g. for 1 of mine I used a food safety related project, as it covers "health" it was fine).
Mine took me about 8 months beginning to end, working 2 hours extra in the office Monday-Thursday most weeks!

Word of warning you have two years to complete this after the initial payment. Ensure you put enough time by to complete this and put the deadline in your diary IOSH will just cut you off after this period with no warning. So plan is the key.

Further to #11 also after two years the experience / evidence will no longer be acceptable (considered out of date).

Evening Joseph,
I have just completed, submitted and had a return as approved. The process for me took 12 months and I chose to submit in hard copy. I found that I had to read the criteria several times to identify what was actually required and what work place activities would suit. Ensure that you complete a planning sheet that correlates with an evidence sheet followed with a reflective account for each criterion. Once the first was complete I followed the same convention / format and layout for all of the rest in tune with the criteria stipulated for the unit D submission. It worked. The assessment turnaround was 2 months. Just awaiting a CPD audit and then an invite to the peer review board. For the PRB an employment record is required outlining prior experience / job roles, a ten minute power point presentation on where you started to where you hope to end up and a list of questions on core knowledge. All of these templates are available on myIPD.
Hope this is of help and the best of luck to you Regards Alex

Thanks Jake, Firestar, Chris and Alex.
It's great that everyone has been so supportive in their replies. I'm looking forward to getting to grips with everything that's to come.
Thanks for the kind wishes too.
