Could anyone please advise on any current legislation regarding the changing of spare wheels on live motorways (and other carriageways), and any relevant information of guidance that I can access to further update our operating procedure on company vehicles.

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Kind regards - Roger

There is no law in the UK currently prohibiting you from changing a wheel on a motorway.

That being said, I don't think it is a wise option.

The last place I worked for has a policy of not changing wheels on a motorway and of only doing so on other roads if it is possible to do so safely.

I did it once many years ago, near side rear, M62 motorway. Had it been the off side I think I would have been killed by the trucks speeding past.

I recommend all company vehicles to be in a breakdown scheme, AA/RAC/Green Flag etc. then just make a phone call and get up/down the bank away from the vehicle.

The last I heard life expectancy on a hard shoulder was 6 - YES 6 minutes.

Our policy on travelling on company business uses the AA guidance on what to do if you breakdown :-

after all, why re-invent the wheel !

Also get 'upstream' of your vehicle, so that you don't get hit by debis when someone crashes into it.
