Hi all,
I have a second interview for an EHS role at an oil refinery. I haven't worked on a COMAH site before, any advice gratefully received!

Hi Helen

I'd read the final report of the Buncefield Major Incident Investigation Board (on HSE website) and the Baker Report into Texas City explosion in March 2005.

Be ready to discuss low probability, high consequence events in the context of process safety v personnel safety.

Obviously the E comes before the H&S for a reason, ask them about it and why (if you dont know) so crank up your knowledge on the environmental regulations as well, and about safety cases and how it is implemented (not just via management systems). Also, what is teh diffeent type of operations, regulatory visits (prohibitions and improvements).

From memory, you can find out about their safety case as it should be a public record 9HSE & EPA/SEPA

You won't find out about their safety case any longer. Information previously in the public domain withdrawn on grounds of national security.

You should be able to find out about the off site emergency plan which the local authority is required to prepare assuming it's a top tier COMAH site (I can't imagine that it would not be top tier, and there may be multiple top tier sites near each other as is the case at Grangemouth as example).

Ah yes, the SSI ruling, I forgot about that and the fact some were even removed from maps and topography pics.

Thanks for the correction. Mind you, im sure original user/poster will of done a thoroufh internet search, as well as what Safety Cases contain for the interview...didnt you.

Until it no longer suited HSE not to have information in the public domain, HSE managed to persuade the BritOval public inquiry Inspector to restrict the report as regards safety issues. Apparently noone would guess that there's some gasholders nearby.

There are no secrets better kept than the secrets everybody guesses (George Bernard Shaw, 1893).

When I came up to Glasgow in 1979, there were no sign posts on the M8 to tell you where Bishopton was. Presumably this would stop the Soviet Union from knowing about the Ordnance factory.

I work as a HSE manager within the petrochemical industry. I have been based at a large oil refinery for over 15 years now.
Please PM me if I am not too late and you have already interviewed!
Top tier will look at :
Permit to work.
SSoW.
Human reliability assessments (hra's)
Process release of tanks, vessels, pipe work etc.
Advanced risk assessment for high risk/ unusual tasks etc.
Incident reporting and investigations will be key - we report (should report!)everything! Issuing lessons learned etc.
Near miss reporting
Proactive KPI s
Safety conversations and behavioural safety.
Aspect and impact assessments and operating permits.
Would think they would touch on some of that.

I believe that exchanging a few words of some case study might helpful you must be prepared with some statics and data that will be really helpful in interview. Best of Luck!!
