BS 5395-3: 1985 Stairs, ladders and walkways, Part 3
Code of practice for the design of industrial type
stairs, permanent ladders and walkways;
Is this the right one or is it old?
We have these permanent vertical ladders and currently are looking at fall protection systems for same.
One in particular uses a unistrut type rail up the middle that your safety harness is connected to as you climb. If you fall, you won't fall far.
Is anyone familiar with this v regs etc.

Mick The status of BS 5395 is something of a mixed bag, with some elements remaining current, some partially replaced and some under review. The 'replaced bits' are now contained in BS EN ISO 14122 Parts 1-4, which comprise the following parts, under the general title "Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery" • Part 1 : Choice of a fixed means of access between two levels • Part 2 : Working platforms and walkways • Part 3 : Stairs, stepladders and guard-rails • Part 4 : Fixed ladders Part 3 includes some discussion of fall protection requirements. If this does not appear to be what you're really after then I would suggest you look for other references on the HSE web pages. Sorry.
It is actually Part 4 that discusses fall protection devices.
This advises that a ladder should be fitted with a fall protection device when the height of the ladder flight is more than 3m. Selection of a suitable type of fall protection device shall be based on a risk assessment in accordance with EN ISO 14121-1.
The standard goes on to say that in terms of choosing a suitable device, the safety cage shall be the preferred option because it is always present and the actual safety function is independent of the operator’s actions. Where it is not possible to install a ladder with a safety cage, due to space restrictions and special access conditions, a fall arrester shall be provided. A fall arrester shall only be used on low-frequency accesses and significant total climbing heights.
Presumably, if a permit system was in force, it would be easier to justify the harness/fall arrester arrangement for most other situations too.
