If a person with narcolepsy suffers a sleep attack or cataplexy, how best can a first aider respond - should they try and wake the person?

DRAB - recovery position would be my answer; but I also asked my wife who is a nurse (I was a bit baffled by this) We both came to the opinion you can't diagnose so treat as any other unconscious casualty, their Dr might give further advices as each case is unique. As for waking them, my wife believes this may be difficult anyway, but this is different to sleep walking etc as they are just asleep... I think this is one of those conditions with a lot of different views, so discuss with the affected person and discuss what action they want you to take.

I have not encountered this condition yet. I am a great advocate of talking to the person concerned and getting their view of how their condition is best managed. If you have a person with this condition, I would suggest this. They almost certainly have views about how they should be treated when they are incapacitated. You cannot go far wrong with DRABC. It should be obvious that they are asleep and not truly unconscious.
