A number of our mechanics undertake routine maintenance on the top of vehicles including refuse lorries, road sweepers and buses.
I'm currently reviewing our current arrangements for working at height and my preferred option would be to procure a bespoke adjustable gantry system which would afford suitable edge protection for persons working on the roof of vehicles. Such a system could be adjusted to suit different sizes of vehicles.
Does anyone have such a system in use within their vehicle workshop? If so, any views on the merits or otherwise would be welcome.

I was once involved with a similar situation. Decision made was to install an overhead fixed base (fall arrest) system to allow effective fall protection as vehicle workshop catered for a range of different vehicles / heights (much the same as you describe) and allowed flexibility for repair / maintenance work to top of vehicles through use of full body harness and lanyard. Emergency rescue plan required as was specific training for users. System worked well, and was a real improvement.
