I worked in the middle east and my father has just left Iraq, he said its a good deal safer now (bombs and bullets wise) that the Americans have left, seemingly if you're British, you're ok if you're American they dont like you much. As for the machinery its bodge a job, all machinery thats falling to bits after years of international sanctions, a guy I done an induction for said they found some washers, wire, bolts on the ground and just bodge things together lol, quite an eye opener. Not like the west's way of working.

Where in Iraq? It's a big country and Kurdistan is a lot different to Basra.

Hi there,

I am currently writing this to you from Basrah, IRAQ. Oil and gas industry here is the best place for someone to lay low and ear alot of money. You dont have to work that much and you are getting paid a highest salary in the same field.

Trust me, dont think about it and accept the offer.

I am currently working in the UAE and an ex colleague of mine has taken a job in Iraq (Basra). He has told me that the money is great, but, there is nothing to do, accommodation is generally poor, equipment is in poor order and parts are hard to come by and overall its a little soul destroying. Personally, I love the middle east but I do benefit from living near to Dubai.

I worked near Mosul in the north of Iraq for the US Forces and treated as a foreign national being English! I came back in 2009.

As it's been said the bodge-it culture is definitely present (it has to be as everything is difficult to get), apparently it's a bit like Africa.

I've seen many fuel tankers on the road hauling loads that in most countries would be banned, no lights, no windscreens, sometimes no proper cabs.

Whatever you decide, think of your personal safety at all times.

Would love to get out to Iraq on a rotational role. I have a background in drilling HSE. Can anyone out there in IOSH land assist?

Given current events - still fancy working in Iraq?

Personally I would object to being used as target practice or being pushed into a ditch and 'slotted' with a 7.62mm AK47 round.

As long as the danger money is there some people will go for it. Besides, you can always AK back at 'em JJ.

My life is worth more than a few £000's 'danger money'.

Not enough money in Iraq to pay me danger money to work there.

See previous 1st response, don't fancy being slotted just because somebody thinks their version of religion is more correct than mine, or none at all in my case.

I'm worth more than that!! Whether in cash terms or whatever you choose to measure in.

Go To Kurdistan.. is safe, even now with a lot of bad news around, but check that the company who hiring you, whether it has a good security management system in place or not. Otherwise do not go any where in Iraq
