HSG 65 is just something you follow; it’s guidance from the HSE on what you might do.
OHSAS 18001 is an auditable H&S standard. The basic core requirements are similar to what you get in HSG 65 but the system goes into much more details of what you must do to comply with the standard. There is also a requirement for continuous improvement in OHSAS 18001.
It depends on what you want- anybody can follow HSG 65 but if you want to go for OHSAS 18001 then you will need to expend some time, effort and money to make it happen.
And of course OHSAS will disappear in the next few years and be replaced by ISO 45001.

Stick with HSG65 it is in it's basic form and if you are running a small to medium company, then there really is no benefit of going full ISO 18001, unless your customers actively look for that??

As long as your current management system works, then there is no need for change.

The primary differences:-

BS OHSAS 18001:2007 lends itself to certification whislt HS(G)65 does not.

BS OHSAS 18001:2007 has individual clauses, thereofre even if you do not go for certification, it is probably easier to undertake a gap analysis and audit and you can use BS OHSAS 18002 trhe deatiled guide, whereas for HS(G)65, you will have to compile your own.

HSG65 is avilable free and if there is no supply chain driver that required you to go for certification, a better option for SME's.

Thanks guys.

Having always worked for SMEs I have only really used the HSG65.

Does anyone resources that they can recommend for learning more about the OHSAS18001 as I am currently seeking employment and most jobs seems to require a knowledge of this. Any examples would be much appreciated, as although I know the basics of what its required I would like to do some further reading/learning.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, the OHSAS 18001/18002 set is fairly expensive, unless your library has it--most unlikely! (In fact, if interested, you need to get OHSAS 18002 only as it has all the clauses of OHSAS 18001 in it)

There is a textbook, "Managing safety the systems way Implementing BS OHSAS 18001:2007"

Managing safety the systems way Implementing BS OHSAS 18001:2007" sample pages!! yes, it is official

You should have a look at the excellent IOSH guidance, "Systems in focus: guidance on occupational safety and health management systems" --please copy & paste the full link as there is a problem with how IOSH has the web address!

There is also an HSE comparision of HSG65 with other key management ‘standards’, but it is outdated to an extent!

You might be interested in PAS 99. It is about integrating OHSAS/ISO standards. Here is a link to a fre draft. Make sure you read the caveat.

Also, be aware that HSG65 was significantly revised and reissued in December 2013. Personally I judge it's a helpful revision, for example now using the PDCA cycle rather than POPMAR, and also with some specific advice on Process Safety, for those who have relevant hazards. It also includes some signs of both good and poor management practices. Others who have posted on this Forum did not agree when they first read it - but in any case, make sure you are referring people to the current version of HSG65!
