Professional and Licenced Alcohol Distillation

Hi all! I'm looking into the process safety side of alcohol distillation for someone and the risk assessments associated with its manufacture and distribution. The Still is being purchased from America and I'm struggling to obtain any technical data sheets for the materials used in the apparatus from the manufacturer, they're just not forthcoming with the material. Am I right to insist on these and also what form of quality certification is required for EU/UK standards? Can anyone point me to any legislation or guidance that may assist me.
Really appreciate your help.
Jon.

I would start by asking what is the capacity of the still and what is the heat source.
I wouldn't initially be too concerned about the materials used in the apparatus, unless fracture, leakage and fire were significant risks.
What is the alcohol being distilled from? What is the concentration of alcohol in the distillate?

Hi Jon,
Not sure whether the still you mention is (a) copper pot still or (b) distillation column.
If (a), then no published standards apply and it is an atmospheric distillation. If (b), then issues such as Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) may arise, so all of the relevant pressure vessel standards. NB American (ASME) codes are not harmonised European standards.
Materials of construction are less of an issue than the explosive atmospheres that will exist every time the equipment is used.
Once the alcohol content exceeds 20%, it should be regarded as ignitable (f.p. 35degC approx.).
The requirements of ATEX legislation will apply in all cases.
