During the initial periods of installing services, future safety methods were not taken into consideration as they are today. Except from the reliable hand digging trial holes, is there currently an innovative method of detecting Water and Gas plastic pipes (old pipes - without metalic elements)?

Ground Penetrating Radar. "Detecting" isn't quite the same as "locating", but it can tell you where to trial dig.
