Hi

On many roofing companies they states ‘The Health and Safety Executive recommends a minimum walkway width of 430 mm, or 600 mm if materials are to be carried along a walkway’. Just wondering what is the original source of this guidance?

If anybody can shed some light on this that would be greatly appreciated, as I can’t find where this guidance comes from.

Thanks

Steve

Not certain where the 'many roofing companies' are stating this - but I would guess it comes from the standard scaffold spec for two or three board widths...???

My first thought was the same as yours Steve, but it didn't seem wide enough. I always thought you needed a max gap between board and building etc of about 300mm to stop someone falling through then you need a toe board the other side (which has to be attached to some thing), so 430mm didn't seem enough.

What is your basic question, as the title to it is "Minimum width between plant on roofs to allow safe access". I am presuming that you have or plan to have more than one "plant" on the roof , therefore what type of roof? It is not likely to be a platform, thereofre the safe width will depend upon what type of access is required and whether the plant is temporary or permanent. Is it only for personnel or do you need to move equipment, parts etc and also maintain/repair it ?

It came from The Construction (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regs 1996 where the following was stated. A working platform shall—

(a)be of sufficient dimensions to permit the free passage of persons and the safe use of any equipment or materials required to be used and to provide, so far as is reasonably practicable, a safe working area having regard to the work there being carried out; and

(b)without prejudice to paragraph (a), be not less than 600 millimetres wide;

A Youngman board was 600mm wide and the platforms in Mobile Towers are 600mm wide too.
