Folks, I work in the Oil and Gas Industry and would like to try to re-invigorate our Safety Meetings, at the moment we have a set agenda which is pertinent, however I'm thinking of some out of the box ways to get the audience to participate a bit more. We've done things like the 5 or 10 question quiz and the winner gets a freebie or two, we also have a discipline specialist sometimes take the lead on the main theme of the month. videos from time to time also are another method we've used to get the message across. Any suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks Andy

I have a powerpoint pack that runs like a jepardy quiz show that I can send you if you give me your email address? You need to put your own question set in and it works well for us.

This may be counterintuitive to the overall safety message, but try changing the pace of the meeting and agenda items by declaring the meeting needs to be cut by say 15 or 30 minutes. People become comfortable if the same agenda always runs for say 60 or 120 minutes. Chopping it may well force more focused engagement. Worked for me when I declared a review would end in an hour and a half not the usual overrun to 4 or more hrs. Same output, less waffle etc and happy guys as they got home on time. Jim

We had a similar scenario, same agenda each meeting and a lack of input from the members of the group. I decided to change the agenda around and wanted more engagement from the members of the group, so each meeting now we have a "case study" - each meeting I pick an incident that has actually occurred within the organisation (anonymise where appropriate) and give this to the group to read and comment on. This has been received well and ensures more engagement from them and more interest as its something "real" that they can relate to. Also sparked good discussion, as opposed to me doing all the talking!

I used to start the meeting 90 minutes before home time.................or do it "first thing" with Bacon sarnies and a 90 minute scheduled time.................both worked.

At a H&S Committee I was at we were discussing how we could make the H&S information available to those not on the internet. One of the union reps said we could put in on a cd (meaning cd-rom) I said I couldn't sing and we spent the next wee while working out actions similar to YMCA for DSE, manual Handling etc. The EIS who was chair at that time wanted it minuted to show that health and safety can have a sense of humour - took a few minutes of our time so short isn't always productive! thanks again folks! Helen, I'm liking that idea, we have a tendency to just go on and on about incidents that have occurred, we have our meeting on Sunday so I'll go for a case study! :)
