Hi experts can anyone give me some advice. I have a substance which is in the back of bulk tippers but has to be got out by hand. The problem I have is the securing of the tail gate in the air. Risks are in might fall and crush etc has anyone come across this before and what SOP did you put in place?
Is there a device on the market for this?

I cannot tip the trailers!

Hi Joshua,
I'm not an expert in haulage but a couple of points do occur to me:

1. If the trailers belong to a different company than your own then you need to speak to them about having the trailers modified with securing straps etc to keep the rear door open and safe

2. If the trailers are yours then I'd speak to the trailer manufacturer about the problem and see what they suggest - you might have identified a new product for them!

3. Is it possible to use trailers which have a "walking floor" (I believe that's the correct term). These floors actually move backwards and forwards to slide the material out of the door without tipping. I know they exist because I've seen them used in a documentary series about a well known haulage company!

You can get tail gate props for most tippers - the manufacturers should be able to supply these (I'd assume they have to be tested under LOLER annually though).

Automatic tail gates may be a solution too, but I guess you're unlikely to change your fleet just for this.

Is there any way you can tip - you'd save the access issues into the body then too. You could then maybe wash-out dependant upon the material you're trying to shift.

Tipping vehicles are not subject to LOLER only PUWER.

Can you not get a walking floor trailer or an ejector trailer. Tipping trailers are rarely used these days as loads can become stuck to the side of the trailer when tipping, add a bit of wind and they frequently go over.

Edit Button:

The following trailers have barn type doors that open outwards. Some ejectors have hydraulic doors which would need to be propped as said above.
