Hi I just want some opinions on what you all would do in these hypothetical situations -

What would you do if you thought a manager in a multi site company was lying to you or trying to pull the wool over your eyes on safety matters? eg. covering up something that happened and how would you go about finding out the truth?

How would you hold managers accountable for safety? what methods would you use to achieve this?

Thanks for your help, I am trying to think about what I would do in these situations and could use some advice.

Put your concerns in writing re the hidden stuff, but meet with them individually to lay out your concerns and let them know what their responsibilities, then follow it up in writing. Get data, produce reports, name sites and names. If you have suport from the top, then it will work. If not - you will struggle.

Is this a hypothetical question?

Yes this is purely hypothetical, I was just interested in other peoples opinions as I think I will have to answer these sort of questions when I am interviewed for a position next week. I am also trying to think of any other questions I might be asked so that I can think about answers prior to the interview, so if anyone has any ideas?

It's a very broad but also potentially complex question. I'm sure we have all experienced supervisors, managers and directors trying to pull the wool over our eyes at some stage in our career. Really, you just need to be vigilant and not accept things on face value. indeed, I was once told - don't believe anything you hear and only believe half of what you see!

Now off to the pub for some refreshments.

Kind of do something similar as an insurance surveyor in that we are trying to get to the bottom of how good or bad a client's systems are. Whilst we do not have to work alongside them day to day, we do want to keep most of them as customers.

Gentle, persistant questioning works well. Offer advice and support in one area and win the client / difficult manager over. You can then ask if there is anything else you can help with / take the weight off their shoulders and encourage them to open up to you.

I find that going in heavy and waving facts and accusations around simply causes people to clam up or go on the offensive like a cornered rat.

You can also bring out the financial / legal and moral obligations. Some people do not respond to the legal aspect (Daily Mail readers) but will understand financial implications.

The hoped for outcome is the manager sees you as somebody they can turn to for safety advice and you will be there to support them and listen to their problems.
