Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone can help me with my query. Like everyone, I am feeling rather stretched here at work and am trying to find statistics about the typical proportion of H&S staff in various workplaces. In particular, in a chemical manufacturing facility. How may dedicated H&S staff are there in this industry per 100 employees ? Many thanks in advance. Adrian

I think its 1 in 50 that's the equation we used when I worked in the public sector

I do not believe that there is any accepted number. Some organisations (eg DuPont) may have a low ratio - because EVERY manager manages safety and is qualified. The way management systems are going IMHO we will see more of this - less safety managers, more management of safety, if you see what I mean. If you Adrian are stretched, try delegating and training up others..............and put your concerns in writing. Hope this helps.

1 in 50 for the public sector... since when! We have 1.4 of us looking after 600 staff in 50 odd labs etc. Yes I am trying to get the team leaders and managers to pull their weight but all I keep hearing is... I don't have time for H&S; I am too busy delivering the science.

As many as that . We look after about 6000 staff over 5 service provisions and 100 premises but there are 2 of us.

Wow, some very interesting numbers. Thank you for all your replies. To explain a bit more, we are a small company with 10 employees and I'm also carrying out synthetic chemistry myself. I have been reading about costs for H&S being orders of magnitude higher for SMEs vs large organisations and was wondering if that ratio carried through to the amount of time I need for my H&S duties.

Adrian This is one of those how long is a piece of string questions. So for your case you are a hands on manager ie you understand the work that is being carried out. I assume that the facility is small ( one or two labs) and they are all doing similar processes. If you are working to a standard such as GLP(Good Laboratory Practice) then you already have a systems of SOPs etc so all that require is some way link your risk assessments to your SOPs. Monitoring the work as it is taking place should be straightforward and communications should be easy as you can hold regular meetings with all of your staff. So a small business where information flows easily and quickly can be easier to run. In larger organisations ,it is often the case that nobody understands of the whole business activities and getting people to talk to each other can be really difficult. So smaller should not mean more difficult.

Agreed with this - and it delivers better results, being truly embedded! The HSSE professionals are then left to undertake value adding tasks such as creating or enhancing the management system(s) and deal with specific technical queries / complex Root Cause Analysis etc. etc. rather than day-to-day HSSE management. As an aside, with my current employer I have no idea - lots but then there’s 80,000 employees worldwide.. My previous employer, 4 HSSE roles with a workforce of 10,000 staff in the UK. However, it makies no difference the number of HSSE staff, its the way HSSE is managed and how effective that management is, that really counts!

1 competent person with no support to support etc. ~5000 staff scattered over a wide area plus many thousands of section 3 people and that's only half the story! There are no fixed figures - if an organisation wants to comply with the law they will and v-verse and in my personal opinion the HSE/ EHO's etc will do noting about employers who have inadequate resources. The one and only advantage is that the day goes quick!
