Hi, Has anyone had any experience in writing a course for either IOSH or ROSPA accreditation. If so how did you find it ? Was the criteria sensibly obtainable ? Or did you find the hoops to complex or demanding to jump through ?? I am writing various Induction courses for my company and I am looking into getting the courses accredited just for our own company's use, but I am worried as to how difficult it is to achieve. I would like to think I write informative and interesting courses I hold my PTTLLS but I do not do training as a sole profession so I am concerned that it may be a step too big to try? Any experience you have had regarding this would be gratefully received.

Not ROSPA or IOSH but I have had courses approved by bodies such as the Institute of Leadership and Management. In most cases you would in the 1st instance have to be an accredited centre of learning for the institution. You just have to ensure that any specific learning criteria required by the institution is included - this is clearly set out. PTTLLS may be helpful as this sets out clear methods of engagement and understanding. Remember though they aint going to do it for nothing..... I'm currently working with a UK University where I guest lecture to undergraduate students on enforcement - I'm expanding this course to a broader audience and this is proving to be more awkward and I have to work extremely close to lectures to ensure everything hits the spot.

I wrote a two day management training course for my organisation. They had traditionally delivered Managing Safely to all senior managers, but it was beneath their intellectual level and at four days was "tedious" to say the least. The new course was based upon the Directing Safety syllabus, but with lots of case studies etc as extras. I contacted IOSH at the outset, who provided some quite comprehensive guidance on writing a course, and what they were looking for. After developing the course, I submitted it for accreditation and received a detailed analysis showing the few minor areas for improvement. The final approval and licence came through after the amendments had been made. If you have done PTTLLS, then I would not anticipate any problems with you developing a course. The two contacts in IOSH were really helpful, although they do sometimes have a backlog of work so the process may take a month or two. Hope this helps, Iain

I have had three courses approved by IOSH. I would agree with Iain's point about the backlog - it's worth booking the date for assessment with them as soon as you start, rather than waiting until all the material is ready. Sometimes the questions they come back with indicate a lack of technical health and safety knowledge - but you just have to grit your teeth and answer! The only other thing I found frustrating was that they are very rigid about the format of the knowledge assessment. This can limit your ability to test and prove competence in a way that challenges the participants. It is a very expensive process (in terms of payment and resources) and of course you then have to pay them each time you run a course and order certificates - however some people value the external badging.
