All, just a general enquiry. Has anyone come across any labelling system that can be attached to a steering wheel to indicate that a vehicle or in my case very large plant item should not be used? Yes, we can do other things and make our own signs, it's just that someone mentioned a large disk type label that used to be available to tiewrap onto a steering wheel with details of why the plant should not be used to make it obvious. Just looking for the product if it exists, Thanks, Jim

Sounds like removing the keys and controlling access would be a better control here

FTA do red plastic covers that fit over the steering wheel with a clear pocket you can place your own message in

Just a quick thank you, Grim 72, have replied to your pm, SW, I will go take a look at FTA, Matt, you're absolutely correct, but sometimes people need telling / reminding / an explanation, especially where several people have access to keys across 24/7 shift patterns, Have a great Week End, Jim

Never a big fan of a sign that says "do not use" if the sign can simply be removed and the equipment used. Not only do people take them off if they think they know best or are in a rush, they can also fall off even if tied on. Have just goggled HGV staring wheal lock and a few products came up. Now I know these are designed more for anti theft, but if you are trying to restrict vehicle use where lots of people have keys I would be happier with something like this where there was suitable key control - eg kept by maintenance or H&S team.

I agree that signage alone is not always the best method of preventing someone from doing something unsafe. That said, in train depots it is common practice to have targets attached to front and rear of trains - Do Not Move. The train may be in the process of being maintained or waiting for repair.

We got our own steering wheel covers made by a local sail maker and in my opinion are a bit more robust than the ones I have seen around. We designed them so that the cover can be locked onto the steering wheel by the driver, the key is then brought back into the warehouse, once we have the key we know the driver has made his vehicle safe, this normally goes on the back of the door. I would think the same principle could be used for what you are after.

Some bus operators use a steering wheel cover which is proving to be effective and if you are able to insert an instruction or other message into a clear pocket all the better. At the end of the day, users still need to be encouraged to adhere to the restrictions.

As a couple of posters have mentioned about not relying on a sign and I agree. The Sites I have dealt with already have a system where keys are removed and a chain preventing access is in place but with many vehicles and three shifts this is just an added layer of "protection / info" to the existing system. They are relatively inexpensive and work well with the other controls.
