We recently had our fire extinguishers serviced and have been advised by the engineer that they will require replacing in 2015 as they will be 4 years old.

Can anyone provide information on this subject.

Kind regards, Bowie32124

Extinguisher servicing is done by people who usually have sales targets. And if they've sold you extinguishers that only last 4 years I would be asking some searching questions.

Bowie,

Ask for this to be put in writing. Then why not invite other providers in your business to tender for your contract.

A CO2 fire extinguisher can last up to 10 - 15 years if treated properly. Other types of extinguishers will need to be DISCHARGED and refilled from time to time to ensure efficiency of the fire fighting product inside as it will degrade over time.

I speak from professional experience as a trained fire extinguisher service "engineer".

Go to your boss and explain you think that this crowd are trying to pull a fast one. Brownie points gained for saving unnecessary expenditure!

I wonder if they won the service/maintenance contract by seriously undercutting the competition with a view to doing this?

I once trained as a fire risk assessor alongside service engineers who were training for their work, I remember some of the things they were told to do to sell extinguishers and you should beware the dirty tricks.
