Good morning all,

I am considering using the online Culture Survey Tool produced by a large government organisation (!).

Before I do, I wonder whether anyone who has used this in the recent past would be prepared to let me know the pro's and cons.

Thank you.

I am only aware of the HSE Safety Climate Tool, never used it but when it originally appeared a decade or so ago it was very expensive and unwieldy in my opinion. I believe the HSE were designing a new one, but again not seen or used it.

Why not design your own survey? It's not too difficult, that said there are a few traps the unwary can fall into and it does take some time and implementing a survey does take time from start to finish. That said, it is more satisfying and bespoke to your own organisation which is a big plus. I would be happy to give you a starter for 10.

We have used it and its OK. One issue is the open questions ie those which you define yourself (eg “Name 3 things that will improve H&S in your areas”). Some times with one group you get a pattern of what is not working but other times you just a mess of noise with no issue emerging as a clear problem. You will also need a thick skin as people will use it as an opportunity to take a pop at ‘elf n’ safety’ .

Mike, one danger of any survey is that it raises expectations that something positive will come out of it!

If the only reason behind it is to provide a baseline of information, but no actual commitment to change things for the better, then it could do more harm than good.

Good morning all,

Very many thanks to all of you who have taken the time to post your thoughts on this.

Particular thanks to Ray Rapp who I have pm'd.

Still time for further thoughts and comments from anyone else who has a view.

Thank you.

Mike
