Hi,
This may sound a daft question if someone has got their NEBOSH Diploma do they really still need to attend a one day IOSH Accredited Racking safety course ?
Having looked at the course content a lot of the course involves the legislative element which someone with their diploma has pretty much nailed and has a great appreciation for and the remainder of what a racking check requires is surely a reasonably well educated diploma holder can recognise what is required?? Or have I missed something ??
Please don't send lots of grumpy comments if I have offended any racking specialists, I apologise. I am simply repeating what my boss has just asked me.
Many thanks
Cres

This is a really good point about a lot of so called specialist H&S training which often consists of a rehash of basic H&S ( anyone for MEL again) before getting to the nitty-gritty which might only consist of a couple hours of training in reality.
I myself have the diploma and CMIOSH but I am in no way an expert in racking, shelving etc so if I want to learn about it, what should I do? Try to use what I know and apply ‘common sense’ (no not that again) or do it properly and ending sitting through yet another presentation on the principles of risk assessment, wasting time and money?

Most people doing the course don't have our level of expertise and so the course has to be tailored to suit the masses (it would be remiss of them not to include the legal aspect if there could be people in the room that didn't know it).
Do you know the formula for permitted beam deflection over span? When safety pins are required and when they aren't? what the shear strength of a beam locking pin is?
It's not as straight forward as *Mecanno evan if it looks like it.
*Other construction toys are available. :-)

I suggest a revisit to Part 1.2 of the IOSH Code of Conduct.
I personally find the presumption that a Diploma qualification provides a basis for universal competence rather alarming.

No, and I understand that there is alot more than meets the eye but.....
What we currently do is look out for any damage or element of the racking that has deviated from the original Professional fitting. If any deviations or damage is found then the racking company would be called to carry out repairs then would we need to know ?? As yes that's when the competent person is required and we would never even dream of attempting a repair ourselves.
Do we still need the certificate if we are just checking the racking for damage or deviations not designing or re building it ??

If you don't know what the permitted beam deviation is then I would say yes. You might end up saving yourself money by not unnecessarily calling out the suppliers to repair something that doesn't need day.
It's a one day course. why the reluctance to go on it?

A few years ago a go a job with a company that had a warehouse and as such was required to ensure that all was as it should be.
I have a Nebosh Dip but was not confident I knew enough about racking to be sure I would be able to inspect it adequately.
So, for the first inspection I arranged a specialist company to come in and do it. I followed to guy round and pestered him continually to ask what he was looking at and why etc etc.
After a couple of hours of this, coupled with my previous reading of Regs etc. I was confident I'd be able to do it myself next time, and did for the next few years.
PS it was a pretty small warehouse with only a couple of FLTs
