They just had a great item on H&S myths - lady refused in Specsavers for her son to use their toilet - and how H&S was the excuse. Jane Moore has actually done some research, checked with HSE and telling people to challenge others when they say H&S because it's usually not that but for insurance reasons. Myth busting made famous! Woohoo Women!!

Hi Docking, We had an even better one! A few years back, our local radio station led the news with an item that there would be no Christmas lights in our city due to a change in health and safety regulations. Unfortunately, for them, I rang the newsroom after the bulletin had finished and asked them to contact the "lovely person" to quote the change in legislation (as there had been none) and would they be willing to go head to head with me on the talk in show that over 150,000 listen into each day. The immortal words "Chartered Health and Safety Professional" proved to be a killer. It emerged that they were trying to save money. The newsroom didn't let him get away with it. They led with the story for their next bulletin with a beautiful sound clip from me, stating that there had been no change in legislation. Newsreader put the boot in, saying that since they had followed up as a result of my call and discovered that it had been a budgetary issue and that the Christmas lights would be in fact going up as a result of a listeners vigilance.

Wow - you must have felt very proud. I had a "no win no fee" guy on the phone at home yesterday about my accident? Random sales call but i gave him so much grief he ended up saying "put the phone down, put the phone down" - made me chuckle all night!

I've been "back of house" in many stores and seen what is actually stored in the staff toilets and I would not want any children, or adult customers for that matter going in there, mops/buckets, boxes of various stuff, even cleaning chemicals so it probably was a H&S issue? Toilets adapted for wheelchair users are worse, especially if there are no wheelchair user members of staff. If the store has customer toilets then it is a different matter but if staff toilets only they are well within their rights to refuse entry for a customer.

FS101, I understand where you are coming from, but, if they are not safe for the public, why are they safe for staff?...

Hya Paul, I didn't say they were safe for staff ! What they are is abused and used for storage because they don't have to keep them clear for use by the public. Different ball game when members of the general public are allowed access. I'm sure that premises that have toilets for use by the public will also, have staff facilities, there will usually be differing standards of maintenance. My personal experience and opinion of course.

The main reason why retailers don't allow it is security. Having said that all in the main will make exception for persons in need, e.g. Elderly and children.

People with diagnosed problems such as IBS and have joined the IBS Network have a card which they should show to say they can't wait!! The problem is most retailers I have come across don't know about it...
