Hi We may be having a young lad who is currently 15 years old, has completed his exams and will be 16 on 1st August. We hope to take him on for the summer possibly starting next week doing general assy work with a screwdriver. Have tried researching but have had limited success and wish to confirm limited knowledge. Q. What are the restrictions we would be under whilst he is 15 until his birthday in August? Q. When he turns 16 what other restrictions would there be? As ever, thanks in advance for any assistance given. Badger

Hi Badger, Speak to your Local Authority Education Welfare Officer - they will have all the information you require at their fingertips! Steve

Try the HSE website for young people & the law. http://www.hse.gov.uk/youngpeople/law/ From waht you have described, appears to be OK, BUT training & supervision are the key aspects

Barrie, I agree with Steve. You need to talk to, or websearch, your local county council. If this youngster is still below the school leaving age ( and it looks as if he is) then you will need to obtain a 'permit to employ' from them. The info they provide will have some guidance about permitted hours and prohibited work etc but then it is simply a case of----wait for it--- review your risk assessments to see if any additional controls are required to keep the lad safe. If significant then record the additional controls; if not then get on with it. The controls re hours sand permitted work are usually embedded in the local bye-laws so it is important to check locally.

From the directions so far I have found on the UK Gov site: "In England, your leaving age depends on when you were born. You can leave school on the last Friday in June as long as you’ll be 16 by the end of that year’s (school?) summer holidays". In which case he will be OK due to his birthday being mid way through the holidays, BUT elsewhere, because he is not yet 16 so (grey area) we need to obtain a work permit for a month. For the duration he will be classed as a work experience 'child' where our RA's are more stricter, even tho' he's not coming in contact with any machinery. Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. Badger

He may not even be able to leave school until he´s 18 https://www.gov.uk/know-when-you-can-leave-school Then they can only do 40 hours max https://www.gov.uk/child-employment# And there are limitations https://www.gov.uk/child...ions-on-child-employment
