Hi everyone, I just joined the forums and would really appreciate some advice/info. I graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery undergraduate degree and am looking at undertaking a Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, most likely at a UK university. I don't know what the job market might be for me with such qualifications. Potentially, where could I work and in what kind of roles? Would I need to get the NEBOSH certification as well? The only work experience I have currently is as a dentist.....As a foreign trained dentist, would I also need to get GDC (general dental council, UK) certification to be able to work in the UK? I'm pretty confused, not sure where to get all this information. I'm trying google searches but not getting anywhere. If anyone could give any advice, it would be most helpful. Thank you!

Hi Saudi, It's unusual to come across a dentist who wants to move into health & safety :0)
Before committing yourself to the time (and cost) of a Master's degree I would suggest that you think carefully about what you want to get out of a health & safety career. For example: do you have a special interest in construction safety, or maybe you're more interested in the legal aspects of safety management, or maybe you'd like to move into occupational health rather than safety?
It would certainly be easier (and cheaper) to do a NEBOSH Certificate course in health & safety, and I'd suggest that you start that way. If you find you like health & safety (and it's not for everyone) then you can think further about developing your skills and knowledge - and if you find you don't like it then you haven't invested too much.
Starting a career in health & safety can be difficult since employers will often want both experience and qualifications. I would suggest, therefore, that you speak to consultancy firms to see if you can identify any openings for a trainee rather than try straight away for a company post as a health & safety adviser or similar.
With regards to dentistry I would suggest that you contact the British Dental Association (www.bda.org) and ask for their advice.
Hope this helps :0)

Surely you will earn more money (in the UK) being a dentist - than working in h&s.
Is being a dentist that bad?
