Good Afternoon,

As part of my remit as health and safety manager at my site, I have responsibilities for our head office function; a large office environment of around 3000 people. I am looking to start to make an impact on developing a positive culture growth in this building. I have extensive experience of behavioural safety in heavy manufacturing but limited in this type of workplace.

Does anyone out there have experience of introducing cultural development and growth in a very large office environment? If so, I would love to have a chat and bounce some ideas around.

Best Regards.

Clive

Hmm broad subject, however have you considered measuring the prevailing culture via a safety climate survey?

I'm with Ray on this, you need to get a baseline of where the culture currently is through tools such as the climate survey, then analyse the data and formulate your plan.

Approach this in the same way you have done in your previous industry, this is about hearts and minds.

Probable the most cost-effective and reliable measure for the purpose you describe is a sell-designed repertory grid, developed well before measures of 'safety climate' and 'safety culture' were invented, and used for change on large, medium, small and one-person levels.

Self-evidently, the better your design and execution, the more useful the data and interpretations you can get. 'Heavy duty' tools aren't for light-weight interventions - though you don't have to spend enormous amounts of time, money or sweat as long as you know what you're doing.

Probably the best guides in English to the rep grid are by Martin Fromm at the Institute of Personal Construct Psychology at the University of Stuttgart.

Thanks very much guys, I am very grateful for the responses.

The safety climate survey is already underway running from 23/6 until 11/7 and as you point out our baseline data can be generated at this point.

The fun really starts after that!

KieranD, I will be in touch shortly.

Best regards

Clive
