Hi guys,
I am looking to cross over into health and safety from the asbestos industry, which I have worked in for the last 10 years, from surveyor/analyst through to my current role as Project Manager in the North West.
Looking at advertised jobs, it's hard to know which jobs to apply for, I completed the Nebosh General Cert & Fire cert around 5 years ago, and would like to progress and complete my Diploma as soon as possible.
I would appreciate some advice on what level I should be applying for, I believe that a lot of my skills are interchangeable which will make it easy to adapt, but obviously don't have industry specific experience.

In Ireland, Crossing over means something completely different.
What area of H&S do want to specialise in as this will help us help you.

Haha -oops!!
I'm not entirely sure which area if I'm completely honest, I have been looking at H&S advisor positions and such like, but have been informed that I should also look at construction with my experience. I am just after somewhere to make a start and try and develop my skills and experience, but not sure if I'm applying for completely the wrong thing (I have only started looking this last week) it's now or never!

I'd say someone with a dip and experience in asbestos would be in considerable demand.
Don't think the Dip is anywhere near as easy as the NCG, but I reckon you would not find it too much trouble with your background.

As Walker said, Scatch, assess what you want to do BUT MOST importantly, ensure that you'll have enough time to do it.
By that I mean the following equation:
Work + Attendance at course + Time for assignments must also be able to facilitate TIME for family and some down time for yourself.
Otherwise severe case of GBE and Burn Out could follow!

Thanks again guys,
I am thinking if I can get a job and check that it's the right choice for me, then doing the diploma will be the natural next step. I have previously looked, but it's a big expense and I have only found one place that does evenings (2 nights a week) which I imagine would be hard on anybody!
Is there somewhere that details the specific areas and brief job descriptions or any more info that would be of any use to help in my search???

I too 'crossed over' from the asbestos industry as an analyst/surveyor into H & S a little while back. I started with a contracting company that does asbestos removal but also other disciplines as well, which meant I could finally broaden my knowledge and experience (I found asbestos work quite monotonous). If you feel the Diploma is a bit expensive and difficult to fit in, have you considered the NVQ 5?

Thanks CW, it's good to see that somebody has made the transition successfully! I am still looking every day at jobs, but don't seem to be getting anywhere fast as I am still unsure of what I can apply for. I don't know anything about the NVQ5 is that quite a common course?? I was amazed at the cost of a diploma, which was why I wanted to try and get a job first so that I knew it was for me before I spent all the money, as Monotonous is definitely a word I would use for asbestos!!!
