Any pointers gratefully received.

I've just discovered that we sometime store nitrogen cylinders (used of the purging of Air-con systems) in an external storage container in our car park.

I can think of a number of reasons why this is not a good idea, not least of which is the fact that it is unbelievably hot in there today and there is no ventilation.

However, before I out pen to paper (fingers to keys) I was hoping to quote specific regs.
Are we in the realm of The Pressure Systems Regs ? Although we seem to have a relevant fluid under pressure, do these Regs apply to stand alone cylinders. There is also plenty of guidance on the storage of LPG cylinders, but nitrogen is non-flammable. I'm also looking at the Confined Space / Oxygen depletion angle.

Any help gratefully recieved

Do you mean Nitrogen gas, or liquid Nitrogen as per the post title? There is a hell of a difference. You can consult pressure systems regulations, but my suggestion for specific advice would be the codes of practice issued by the British Compressed Gases Association. You should also be able to get advice from the suppliers of your cylinders, most reputable companies produce this, and you might as well get something from them for the cylinder rental you are doubtless paying.

If you do indeed mean Nitrogen gas, cylinders should be stored outside in a locked cage/compound, with ventilated sides but a roof on. If you are storing them anywhere without ventilation, you are asking for trouble, as any leak will result in an asphyxiating atmosphere that would knock someone out in two breaths if they entered it.

For gas cylinders:
BCGA GN2

For liquid dewars up to 50 Litres BCGA CP 30.
Yes the confined space regulations as it is one of the specified risks...

Hope this helps..

Is your car park enclosed / underground? It makes a big difference!

Hi,

No, Car park is external.
I've sent the required email - stating secure external ventilated storage in line with the HSE's LPG storage guidance, or no storage. Got a positive response from the relevant director.

Just wanted to be sure I had my ducks in a row first.

Many Thanks

Fiesta - it isn't as dangerous as LPG.

Have a look at the BOC advice
