Afternoon all.

I am putting together an in-house training pack, and certs for a course. I have the format picked, and have the usual titles, dates, course provider, name of person.

My query is, is there a specific amount of information that should be displayed on a cert?

I usually include a brief list of the main topics covered. So, for example, if I do an in house fire awareness course I will (in v. small print) say on the cert course covers risk assessment, choice of fire extinguisher, evacuation and the concept of progressive horizontal evacuation, PEEPs, housekeeping, fire prevention, what to do in event of fire etc etc. The point of doing this is so that anyone looking at the certs will have some idea of what was covered at a glance. I do something similar for manual handling, asbestos, COSHH etc.

I would suggest that you also keep a detailed program of the event that can be referred back to in the event of any mishap, claim or HSE questions. Then the certificate just has to be appropriately worded, perhaps with a reference number for the training program.

i.e. Mechanical Handling, Course Reference ABC123, Smith Company

• Name of person taking the course
• Name of tutor
• Title of course
• Reference to the curriculum that they are doing. If that is not available a short description of the course.
• When they did the course
• How long was the course
• Was there an exam or test at the end
• Does it link into a national qualification?
That’s it, I think.

I'd also put a certificate reference number on it. I had an incident in my previous employment whereby someone had created certificates with our companies details on them and tried to pass them off as genuine. The company they were trying to give them too thought the logo looked a bit funny in print and phoned to query if they were genuine and I confirmed that they were not; after this we put a reference number of each and every certificate we issued and used an excel spreadsheet to track.
