Hi there
I have been made aware of some used tins of printing ink and some canisters of various sprays and cleaning products in the manufacturing site at my work.
I have contacted the local tip and council but they cannot take them away because they are classed as hazardous waste.
I am just curious as to what other companies/people do with their waste and what course I should take.
We have a total of 3 boxes of various, small quantities of waste and left-overs but a waste disposal company have quoted £450 to remove them for us which seems rather a lot to me.
Please HELP!!!

I think that's about typical. If you want to pay less they would like you to sign up to a regular contract, which might work out cheaper per load.

Not a bad quote really for the work they have to do.
Have you manufacturer information as they may be interested in recycling depending on the material content.

As an afterthought I have just received a bill for the disposal of roughly two wheelie bins worth of radioactive material- £30 000!

I think that £450 is probably about right, you can always try another reputable waste company? There are many out there and are usually in competition with each other for the work. Try getting a second quote from another company.
We use a company in the Midlands, and although they have further to travel, they are the best value for money, plus we can prove that they are responsible.

Is the quote for a complete identification, label & packing service? If so it is about right as they will send a chemist/technician to identify, classify, label and pack your waste and produce the necessary haz waste consignment note.
If you know what you have and can produce an itemised list including hazards (from relevant MSDS (sorry Safety Data Sheets)), AND you can pack them safely yourself then the cost may fall.
We are charged £2/kg for lab waste (excludes transport and admin - this is generally a set fee of £250-£350 for transport & £35-45 for the waste documentation)). So if you have 50kg of mixed hazardous waste the quote is reasonable, especially if the contractor does most of the work.
If you haven't already - try getting alternative quotes from other haz waste contractors, national and local. There are many - Veolia, CSG, Tradebe, Biffa - and so on.

If you have a relatively small amount of various types of hazardous waste then perhaps look at the 'Waste Safe Mini' from Biffa. It has about a 90L capacity and you pay when its replaced, we have ours done about every 2 to 3 months and they charge us about £90.
Biffa allow you to dispose of mixed waste streams (with some exceptions), such as canisters, oils, rags, contaminated PPE etc and they sort it their end.
Very cost effective solution I find.
