Has anyone got any good links or names of books in developing a safety culture within a workforce. I am embarking into a new job and company in the next few weeks and although I have developed the company I am in now, after 10 years I have forgotten how I started.

Invictus,

I got Talking Safely by Tim Marsh, it's only a small book but it gives a good insitght into safety conversation, because that's where most things start. I also did alot of research on the internet, and have got some ideas in place because that's what I am trying to do at my current place of work, sadly I'm on a fixed term contract so not got a great deal of time to get things moving!

Good Luck though, if you want to bounce any thoughts or ideas, please pm me

Hi Invictus

The Strategic Safety Culture Roadmap is a practical document that is a free download until the 1st August 2014. It is based on an analysis of Process Safety Disasters running back to the 1970's that identified the common causal factors, underpinned by sound academic/practical research. Get it while you can at http://www.behavioral-sa...-resource-center/level-2

Another free book - Improving Safety Culture: A Practical Guide - is available at http://www.behavioral-sa...re_a_practical_guide.pdf . No Cut off date!

I will declare an interest in that I authored/co-authored both. Good luck in your efforts.

I heartly recommend both
The latter sits on my desk as I reference it frequently and as "hoosier" generously allows free access whats not to like!

a tip though - print it off at work, as its 260 pages long!

Changing Minds http://www.stepchangeins...ion.cfm/publicationid/16 , is a great introduction, available from Step Change website, and very practical. Though developed for the offshore sector, it's applicable to many others.

This title explains practical ways of embedding safety in any organisation, whatever the state of the present culture, and provided the leaders are consistent about making money over at least two years;
:
'The New Psychology of Leadership. Identity, Influence and Power'., S A Haslam, S D Reicher, M J Platow', Psychology Press, 2011

If you'd like a summary of a conference presentation account of contrasting applications of the 'social identity' approach these authors analyse, simply email me.

I have no relationship of any kind with the authors, only than membership of the same professional society with the first two
