Can somebody advise on method to mark signage that does not apply at the moment (instead of removing it)?

My initial idea is to mark cross with black tape on it.

Whatever is likely to be effective in the circumstances!

Traffic lights are covered with a hood. Road signs are placed face down. Overhead motorway information boards tend to display 'Sign not in use'.

How about a sign stating"SIGN NOT IN USE"?
