Hi Guys
I am considering becoming a freelance health and safety trainer, focusing on Manual Handling, Risk Assessment, Working at Height, Fire Safety Awareness and Control and Management of Contractors. Not sure where to start. Any word of advise?

A pretty saturated market I would think.
Hence low prices.

Yes, JJ has made a very valid point. The market for such basic training is highly competitive, not to say cut-throat :0(, and there is the added competition of online courses being available for less than £20 per head.
Unless you have any specialist skills or knowledge to offer then I'd suggest you face an uphill struggle setting out just on your own. Maybe you can find a training company which is looking for associate/ freelance trainers to work on an ad hoc basis?

Some valid points from the previous posts. You didn't mention what qualifications you have regarding health and safety, because that could be your starting point first. However this is my personal experience:- A few years ago I had a go at setting up a H&S consultancy and found it hard work in a lot of areas. I found I was spending most of my time tendering for work that actually working. I found that I was spending a lot of money getting myself qualified and authorized to run courses. (most company's now only want accredited courses such as IOSH, ROSPA etc.) And then there's the public liability insurance that you have to have and indeed keep going years after you may pack in to cover yourself. I may be painting a gloomy picture here, but its good if you know what you may be letting yourself in for. On the up side I have a few colleagues that have made a success of their H&S businesses. So I wish you luck. As for me:- I am now happy working for a national company as its H&S manager.
Cheers Steve W
