Hi All I’m considering adding one of the above Certs to my CV, which would you recommend? Is the IEMA Associate Cert the same level (3) as the NEBOSH Env Cert? Thanks, Adam

Hi Adam, Good question....... Looking at the IEMA Associate Entry Exam Specification, I would say that it possibly was, but I don't think that it is intended to be by IEMA. I have done both the NEBOSH Env Cert (3) and Env Diploma (6), and I can remember covering most of the ground defined in the current IEMA Exam at Cert level. But check out the syllabuses for both to be sure; the devil is in the detail and depth, but there's not too much of that on the IEMA spec. Something that may sway your study decision somewhat further down the track (if that's where you want to go) is the fact that IEMA no longer recognise the NEBOSH Env Diploma when awarding AIEMA. This is because they now offer their own exam and obviously want to encourage people to do that one.....and make themselves some money into the bargain, as this is a relatively recent development by them. So clearly IEMA intend their Associate exam to be of a higher level than 3, but it is hard to see that with the limited detail in their specification (check that against the NEBOSH Env Diploma). Hope this helps.

Morning All, I have done the Nebosh Env Cert and personally I wasn't too happy with the syllabus as I thought there was too much specific technical content (i.e. how scrubbers worked etc - stuff I could look up afterwards should I ever need to), without giving a good understanding of how environmental law is structured, how its enforced and how its prosecuted which everything else builds on. In other words, I came away not knowing what I didn't know. After the Nebosh H&S courses I certainly didn't know everything but I had enough idea of what was out there and how it was structured that I could look it up, i.e. I knew what I didn't know! Hope that makes sense. Steve

If you choose to do IEMA, do not do distance learning, i regret it so much, I had great intentions of getting it done and dusted in 6m, but I am 1 1/2 years in and still not done (Granted I took time off to have a baby), but my motivation is not there in the evenings getting in for work. If you can, do it in a block course and be done with it.
