Can anybody advise me what regulations specifically apply(if any) to the use of rooms for public meetings other than the Fire safety regs. The question was raised about the numbers of people in a particular room but if you have taken this in to account in your risk assessment and there are suitable fire escapes is there anything limiting the amount of people?

I Guess that there might be conditions if this were a licensed event (but these are normally associated with fire safety), otherwise I can't readily think of anything.

The fire safety may give a number greater than what the use of the room is for. There are formulas for working out whether its all seated, partial seating, dancing, stage etc - sorry don't have these with me today.
Also number of toilets available.

If the event is being organised by an ‘employer’ as part of their ‘undertaking’ then Section 3 of Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 applies along with all of the subsidiary legislation including MHSAW ( reg 3 risk assessment)

If the meeting is entertaining - then you MAY need an entertainments licence under the licensing acts 2003 as amended (latest amends 2013). Exact details seem to vary LA to LA, so check with local council website (most have very clear and helpful online info available) Steve

Thanks for all the replies, my only comment is that I doubt people would class the meetings as entertainment as its my local parish council and the only employee is the Parish clerk.

I would tend to agree with you however, I did find the Dibley Parish Council meetings quite entertaining :-)
