Hi all,

I am after some advice, and pointing in the right direction. I'm new to the h&s game and would like to pursue a career in this field. I currently have my NEBOSH General Cert, Fire Safety and Risk Man Cert, and hope to get my NEBOSH Enviro and Construction Managament Certs in the next upcoming months. I dont work in a h&s role, although i've managed a few months secondments doing area saftey coordinators roles. Where do i go next, in terms of qualifications, i've been advised to do NEBOSH Dip, SVQ Level 4, Degree, Auditors Crse, Accident Investigation Course, so im at a loss as what to do. Also it is worth my while joining IOSH ???

Any advice greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

Ross

Ross, joining IOSH is worth while. You get to speak to people about all different topics and get an idea of issues that people face all the time. Course providers seem to prefer you working in a h/s role to do the diploma due to the practical unit. I would plug away at getting experience and the right role will fall to you. I am new to health and safety aswell- I have been in my current role for 3 months and I did the same as you, picking up experience when I could with my last employer. I was turned down continuously for lack of experience but my current employer liked the fact I would get valuable experience to help me develop and I'm grateful for it. I have got NEBOSH general, Fire Safety cert, IOSH Managing Safely, starting my diploma and booked onto she auditors course for next year, might have another auditors course with my work and looking at a conversion to fire safety manager course as well as picking up bits of training with previous employers. The Institute of Industrial Accident Investigators do an online course for £135 or if you join them for a year at £45 you can do the course for free? I'm currently waiting to hear back from them.

Good luck with everything you choose to do!

Jodie

Hi Ross
It can be difficult getting into a H&S role without any experience, and your progression regarding qualifications may, in part depend on this as well.
Some people feel that being a chartered member of IOSH is a worthwhile goal (a lot of job advertisements for a role in H&S do state that the candidate have CMIOSH status) If this is an avenue you wish to go down you must plan ahead. If you have little or no work experience in a H&S role the NEBOSH diploma may be your best route, if however you are in a H&S role or part of your job has H&S responsibility's, the NVQ level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety could be the route for you.
Both of these routes will get you, after completion, graduate status in IOSH. (you will need to keep you online CPD process up to date as well, and obviously be a member of IOSH) Check out the membership criteria on this website to see how to progress from there.
Work experience can mean a lot these days, and I have had a couple of people working in my department one day a week without pay just to get that experience.
Another suggestion is to check out a few recruitment sites advertising for H&S roles and see what qualifications they are looking for. I think you will find that a lot require the following:- CMIOSH / NEBOSH Dip - or equivalent.
Welcome to the world of health and safety.
Good luck Ross

Folks,

Thanks for the input much appreciated and certainly gives some food for thought, as to what avenue i'll go down next. Think it will be join IOSH, get some more experience in my workplace, and sit a few more courses based on the level i am at just now, then hopefully progress from there. I'm fortunate that i can study around my current job.

Cheers and thanks very much
