Thought I would ask, what H&S awards you enter if any?

RoSPA Awards
SHP/BSIF Awards
Any others?

Do you find that your organisation you work for expresses an interest in these industry awards? Are you requested to enter them?
What success have you had in the past/present with awards?

How many other times can I mention the word awards in this awards thread:)

Not aware of any awards my organisation enter.

Personally, I hate them with a passion - sanctimonious slapping on the back by people in penguin suits.

I agree.
You missed box ticking excercises Ray.
Our company goes in for all of these, plus its own version.
I'd sooner stick hot needles in my eyes than get involved.

i don't think that my company is ready for this yet, we have come on leaps and bounds but I think our attentions are best spent improving for safety's sake and not some shiny award.

I've only been in my post for 2 years... maybe I'm a little old fashioned.

Horses for courses depends on the apatite of your organisation. I've worked for company's who won awards and the top table never even knew they had entered them. Complete waste of time and effort.

I currently work for a company that embraces the concept and I have had real benefit from entering and winning awards, it's really helped with the culture.

We enter the ROSPA Acheivement Awards and have been 12 consecutive Gold Medal winners, therefore have a so called "President Award"

What most do not recognise is that the ROSPA Achevement Awards or the BSC International Safety Awards are not competitive awards in context of organisations entering the awards process. The awards, in my view simply signify, based on the adjudidaction process (that is largely document verification based!) the "winner" has a robust health and safety management system and tends to demonstrate improvements. They are by no means "Excellence" awards

For Excellence Awards, the RoSPA Sector Awards and the BSC Sword of Honour require much more.

For the BSC Sword of Honour, you can only enter if you have paid for being audited for its 5 Star System, acheiveda 5 Star rating and then submit more!

For the RoSPA Sector Awards, one does not need to subscribe to RoSPA's Audit system, but I very much doubt that an organisation without an externally certificated Health & Safety managemenmt System can win it!

Depending upon the organisational & safety culture of the applicant, the award scan either be used as a positive motivator/kudos/celebration of performance or vice versa.

However, the entry process does require applicants to allocate resources in context of time etc and if there are conflicting priorities that basic health and safety is being sacrificed, then that is probably hypocracy

I think the best option is see award criteria , then make gap analysis as Jay stipulated .. from some aspects we may consider it as show off activity however sometimes the show off is required if budget allow us....

Our IOSH Branch leaving President bought the branch an award to give to Safety Practitioner of the year a few years back. You had to enter yourself - which people don't like doing. However, when they didn't get any entries they asked again and a few of us entered (since it was one of us who had bought the award).
A panel reviewed the entries and our Chief Executive was contacted to see the support they gave to H&S.

I won, a paperweight and the annual glass trophy. The next year it wasn't awarded (not sure why was advised that the entries weren't of good enough standard - not confirmed though).
Not been awarded since

I put it in my cv but no interviewer has asked about it though a few have taken note of it. Company I worked for then used it in tenders - probably didn't make much of a difference.

Current company have my last employer as a client and they were impressed.

So, only worth having if you can use it.
Other advantage is - my dad was really pleased as were my aunties!

We just won the RoSPA Sector Award for Local Government, even though we're not an LA as it happens, having been Gold Award winners for that last couple of years. It's only for our Operations division, not the whole organisation, and I didn't have anything to do with it as one of my team made the submission before I came into post. We do have an SMS but it's not externally audited.

At my last place we got RoSPA QSA Level 3, which was pretty tough to be honest, and we will be going for an audited award here at some point,
