Can any one suggest how or who to contact regard work experience, I'm a qualified Occupational Therapist, (Bsc) Hons
Degree, with 6 years experience with in a hospital and community setting, with teaching, risk assessment, ergonomics and auditing some of my main duties however transferring from this to an industrial setting impossible! I am currently working for my NEBOSH general Cert & international Cert Oil & Gas, with courses for Assessing DSE, COSHH, Accident & Incident, and my only hurdle is lack of work base experience to change from the NHS-Social Services to an industrial setting.
Can anyone recommend any suggestions?

Maybe your next move could be as an Occupational Nurse/Safety adviser for a large company - especially in the process/chemical industry. Then try and move further across into general h&s from there.

Another option might be as a health physicist in the nuclear industry, if you know the radiation side of things.

Its not impossible from where you are, but its certainly not easy to get into industrial h&s - afraid with industrial h&s it is very beneficial to have some form of technical/engineering qualifications as base line knowledge that under pins quite a bit of industrial h&s.

Jo,

Ian's 1st & 2nd sentences make no sense to me (sorry Ian!), but he is right in the final sentence

If I were you, I'd be trying to combine your therapist know how to your safety aspirations.

Industrial safety is rather poorly paid (supply & demand) so I'm not sure why you want to work in this area.

If you are hoping someone might offer you experience you really need to give us an idea where you live.

Thank you so very much for taking the trouble to respond, my training as an OT is not medical based its generic, I have a
better understanding of a bio social phyco perspective of individuals environment and the effects and impacts on the individual personal and working life.
I'm not looking to go into HSE, but the working environment that effects each and everyone, this of course involves legislation, employers responsibilities etc, I'm truly wanting to work for free! How I go about this is a massive undertaking!
Many thanks agin

Many large petro-chemical companies/pharaceutical companies have their own occupaionl health nurses/departments. They carry out health screening/monitoring etc especially as quite a few chemical nasties may be around. My friend JJ told me this.

Jo

Guess it depends where on the east coast of Scotland you are? Commutable to Aberdeen and the oil industry? Or further south?

Close enough to Grangemouth oil refinery to commute/try for a job there?

Many thanks Ian, I am in Aberdeen, yes I was looking for the oil & Gas industry, I'm NOT medical, my skills are assessing individuals who have difficulty with mobility, daily living skills, coping with everyday life! I'm not to bothered about the pay!
I'm looking to transfer from the health sector into private industry, and I am looking for work experience, I'm finding it
Impossible, really difficult, no matter what qualification I have or experience!

Hi Jo

You may get a look in for a 'human factors' specialist. But not too many jobs doing just HF, usually combined with safety engineering.

A appreciate you are looking for work experience, but as regards the O&G industry I'm struggling to see transferrable skills at the moment - if you are not medically qualified etc.

I'm qualified in assessment, risks, Audits, ergonomics, problem solving, planning, monitoring, performance, access & egress to name a few, of many environments, I thought these are transferable?
Companies including Oil & Gas employ people who need to remain health and safe isn't this what NEBOSH and Iosh are trying to improve and promote? I aim to assist individual's way of thinking and look to change, adapt or improve!

Hi Jo

True these skills are transferrable in the generic sense, but as previous oil companies often look to transfer/train up people internally with operational experience either onshore or offshore.

Or as previous external people with other engineering/science qualifications etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying its not possible to transfer over - but it is difficult. The safety market is flooded with NEBOSH/IOSH qualified people. So any other directly related skills or qualifications make you stand out a little more.

Thats the employment market, I'm afraid. Keep trying though, it is possible.

I moved across from aviation engineering 7-8yrs ago.

If you live in Aberdeen half the battle getting into O&G is already won!
I'd look at the Commercial OH companies that service the Oil industry for a way in.

My company (nothing to do with O&G nor Aberdeen) are what might be considered to be high hazard industrial, use Occupational Therapists for "return to work" purposes so there is demand; just a question of finding it I suppose.

Try the local IOSH branch for contacts
