I am currently looking to relocate back to the UK, primarily to the South West of England or to South Wales and I am looking for opportunities in these areas. I have 8 years of H&S experience, but all of it is in the Travel and Tourism sector and I am keen to broaden my experience and knowledge through working in a different sector. I have the NEBOSH General and currently working towards the NEBOSH Diploma. Is there any advice anyone could provide about changing sectors in H&S? Is there anything else that may help me to find a new position?
Cheers,

The key thing is to sell yourself and don't be put down that you aren't experienced elsewhere. I have moved from Facilities provision to warehousing and distribution- it was scary as this is my first full time role but worth it. tell people in your letter of application you like to be challenged and learn as you go, sell yourself for what you have and what you can potentially have as well. Admittedly it took some time for me to get another position, but I think alot of that was down to the fact I had plenty of qualifications and very little experience- which is understandable. The company I work for now have helped me flourish and I have learned so much already, and I have only been here 3 1/2 months.
I hope this has helped in some way.
Good luck!

When asked this question I always advise retail. I have worked in retail for the past 12 years and I have developed my skill set enormously.
If you work for a major retailer you are engaged in many as pesters of safety to include
Construction and refurbishment Fire safety Workplace transport Facilities management Occupational road safety ( fleet) The public Asbestos managment Workplace ergonomics
The list is endless depending on the retailer. Retail is on the up with the economy and opera unities will soon be out there.

With your background an area you might like to consider is consultancy, i.e. working with a consultancy which advises clients whose staff are required to work overseas either short or long term.
Overseas travel - as you well know - can encompass a wide range of health & safety issues, from driving while jet lagged to working on sites with poor health & safety management, so I'm sure you'd have a valuable contribution to make in this sector.
Just a thought :0)

Hi A lot of H&S skill sets can be utilized in a lot of areas pertaining to H&S. The main issue I feel is having work experience in those other areas. If I was interviewing for a H&S manager to work in; for example, a retail and warehousing environment. I would be asking for someone with the relevant qualifications and experience in that particular sector. I think you need to have a look for an opportunity in the sector you are most familiar with and have had work experience in first. Some companies do offer work experience packages; my own company for instance as taken people on for work experience in H&S roles, but I must add - in unpaid capacities. Its not easy getting a role in a sector your not familiar with but you never know. Good luck
