To whom it Concern: Guys I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of working in South Africa, within the Health and Safety sector? Basically, I would like find out; what is the demand? Locations of employers? Are you likely to be employed in remote locations? Any discussion would be greatly appreciated.

Hi S As there have been no other entries I can add some hopefully helpful stuff I know there was a joint IOSH/South African OSH conference in May which addressed issues which may help. or at least give you a starting point or contacts to follow up on. I worked in Swaziland, small country east of SA some years ago and worked on an Australian foreign aid programme [don't ask!]for the Swazi govt in health and safety-running their Factories Inspectorate-great job. Also Inspector of Machinery -very colonial. I met many South Africans working in the country in many sectors-construction, Asbestos mining , Sugar Cane, growing and refining, usually for South African firms so I think you could expect to work in surrounding countries and other remote locations. I found it hard work with some of the 'Afrikaaners' but it was great couple of years. Times may have changed however, but I would recommend it. Try the SA High Commission. Too Regards Mike

Hi I have worked in SA for many years, but due to affirmative action its become difficult to get jobs or contracts if you are white. For the past 3 years I have worked in the middle east, where race was not as issue. Working in SA is however good, and pay certainly depends in what industry you work, petrochemical, mining, and construction are the best paid. Hope this helps Shane
