Hi All,
Can someone please clarify if a qualification is needed to use a podium step? I was under the impression that persons using podium steps should be competent and trained to do so, but not necessarily 'qualified'. The reason I ask is because I have just read the following statement on a user guide from a well known hire company:-
'the law requires that personnel using steps must be competent and qualified to do so'
This company offers training courses for podium steps, and just wondered if they were misleading their customers for their own benefit!
Many thanks
This was still not answered correctly, All I care about is the answer, I don't want your view or your thoughts. Just CLARITY

Hi John,
As far as I know there are a very limited number of activities/items which require a qualification, and the use of podium steps isn't one of them. Chainsaws yes, fork-lifts, yes, commercial herbicide application, yes, but not podium steps. All access equipment requires some sort of competence, but mostly not qualifications....

Curious, the Law States.... I always thought is says adequate training, information and instructions and the employer must ensure that employees are competent. Yes companies use the terms Licence, Qualified, etc. to sell...

For clarification.
You DO NOT require a qualification for Podium Steps in law.
You DO require a qualification for Podium Steps if the client asks for it.
You DO require suitable & sufficient training (as you say) for working equipment.
As a Pasma instructor, i often get told the law requires you to have PASMA accreditation for working on towers (and Podium Steps) but this is ONLY down to whatever your client dictates.
Hope that clarifies things, John.

frankc is right. For some reason the HSE have this fixation on PASMA training where training prior to this involved the safe use of mobile towers which was sufficient in providing training. No different from the PASMA training. A simple tool box talk or other method of imparting knowledge in the safe use of podium steps based on the manufacturers recommended use to your workforce in my opinion would be adequate as this provides an element of training. If the supplier provides it FOC as their duty of care then happy days but record it as evidence.
