The boss has brought a farm, and I have got to complete loads of SSOW can anyone point me in the right direction. I am after an example or at least were to start. Farming s a nightmare to say the least.

Farming is an activity like any other. Start by making a list of normal production type activities:
Bailing, tractor driving, herding, ploughing etc etc etc. Then risk assess, then write SSOW with the guys who are doing the job. This is definately not a desk top exercise.
The real problem with farming is the lack of proper training and the conctant need to fix, bodge and fiddle. Unlike a factory, quarry or construction site, people are left to sort things out themselves. Guards are removed to adjust and fix, repairs are carried out by novice mechanics. Buildings are fixed by amateurs using incorrect access equipment. Everything is done under a time pressure without the sufficient resource to safely plan repair work.
If you look on the HSE agriculture pages you will get an idea of what can go wrong. If your boss wants to run the farm as a professional business, ne needs to resource it to suit.
Farming culture is very different to anything I have every worked it. Part of my remit is viticulture (wine grapes) and some of the kit and procedures come from the very dark ages.

There is so much to think of with farming, but also depends on the type of farming in question. The things that pop into my mind (from my farming background) are;

1. Vehicle safety (regular checks, stability on rough terrain, types of vehicles, lifting operations, use on the public highway, bucket safety, carrying passengers),
2. Child safety (if there are children present, dangerous animals, falls, being struck by plant),
3. Confined spaces (if you have a slated unit, fumes from such)
4. Illnesses to persons from animals,
5. Hygiene (toilets/ hand washing),
6. Lone working,
7. Manual handling issues (catching animals, lifting bags of meal, lifting bales of hay/straw, lifting fertilizer),
8. Electrical safety (connections around the farm buildings, electric fences, over head power lines)
9. Working at height (repairing/ reroofing sheds, cutting back trees)
10. Animal safety (dangerous animals like wild bulls or cows that have calved)
11. COSHH (for diesel, fertilizer, and animal doses encase accidently injected)
12. Working hours (its not the normal 9-5 5 days a week!!)

Asbestos- roofs and fragile roofs
Entrapment/entanglement in moving parts e.g. PTO, machines
Fungal spores- e.g. farmers lung
Electrical safety- Many smaller farmers like to DIY
Welding
Maintenance and suitability of equipment to the task

There is no end to it.

This year to date in Ireland we have had 22 fatalities in agriculture, 10 of which are children. Good segregation of living quarters/ childrens play areas from farm. Most people wouldnt let a child into a mine or construction site but regular access to farms.
