I understand some large hotel chains are offering free shots of top shelf booze after a certain time (as early as 930pm in our case). Whilst I don't want to be a killjoy, I am looking at discreet but clear ways to try to avoid our people getting totally carried away. Any ideas??

People like to have fun, drink, and let their hair down come Christmas time. Why not just let them do that?

You cannot be serious, you could just live and let live and I know my response if somebody tried to treat me as a un responsible adult at a works do or whatever

Our staff are reminded they are representing the company and behaviour such as violent conduct won't be tolerated- but you have to let people have a little bit of fun?

No wonder we get a bad name if you don't want to be part of it don't go. At Christmas people often will drink excessively, why not issue warnings about drinking driving and drinking to much a couple of weeks before but do it in such away that you are talking generally and then let people make their own mind up.

I know how controversial this can be hence the post. With the free shots, violence springs to mind.

The fact that Christmas parties can be considered an extension of the workplace doesn't make Birchall a kill joy in my opinion although the issues usually relate to HR rather than H&S. A simple search via the internet 'employers responsibilities christmas parties' will bring up a multitude of potential issues whereby an employer arrange christmas parties and provide alcohol.

When I "take over", I'm going to implement the death penalty for anyone, over the age of 12, who mentions the C word before 20th December.

Have you got any history of problems at your doo's?
If not - just enjoy yourselves.
It can be an issue and I have seen plenty of parties stopped - year ago when I worked in heavy industry -it wan not uncommon for different shifts to air the grievances at these events.
Recently when I works for another big name, well known, retailer we had to have separate Distribution Centre Xmas Doo's due to the punch ups.

Where I work they don't discourage the drinking copious amounts of booze, but they do arrange buses to take people home, every hour between 10pm and 2am or thereabouts.
If your beer compass can get you to the bus stop, and your beer goggles can get you on the bus, then you should be fine!

It's not violence that you need to worry about. It's more about who ends up sleeping with who when free booze is involved!!!

This isn't something that can be tackled easily, plus I have little doubt that you will be ignored. Alcohol has a funny way of changing peoples minds too. Your time may be better spent campaigning against the dangers of drinking alcohol in excess, in general, not singling out a specific function.

I think it is more of a problem that drunk people speak their minds and tell it how they see it. Views and opinions that they would not normally air in public. Some people get drunker than others and so some remember what was said.
What is done and said at a Chr.... Annual festive December party ( Ok Walker ?) does not stay at the party and you and they have to live with it the rest of the year.
I don't go to them (Ever), I have no desire to discuss H&S with drunk people (especially those that normally will not engage in a H&S discussion). They can do what they want, because what is a company going to do ? Employ bouncers.
In my view company could organise a meal / entertainment and what they do after is up to them, and if there happens to be a free bar, ok.

SW wrote:Names of these Hotels please - I'm all for some free shots!!! Think I would be hailed a hero if I found this hotel, we let people have fun or what's the point of the party?? If Directors don't want there team members to have fun then don't book places like that.

The last company I worked for hired bouncers, 1 to stop trouble and 2. to stop anyone who didn't work for the company getting in.

I never go to parties partly for same reason as Invictus.
I will often go out for a pint after work with the site lads.
As for the office where I work out of, 95% of the inhabitants I can only just tolerate their presence when I'm getting paid, let alone in my own time.
